Battle Machine: Real Steel is an attempt at reviving the fast paced, over the top first person multiplayer shooters. The gameplay is frantic, explosions and lasers fly everywhere and you have to stay on your toes every second. What am I saying, every split second!
However the game has a twist. Unlike regular shooters where you pick various weapons, Battle Machine features a single weapon. What makes this weapon unique is that it has multiple weapon modes. You can switch to Assault, a high fire rate, low damage mode, or Sniper, a low fire rate high damage mode and so on.
Another feature is that the player has two of this weapons, one in each hand and can switch each one to whatever mode he wants or needs independently. So you can have the left one in Sniper mode and the right one in Shotgun mode, which gives you accuracy and power. Or you can switch them both to Assault mode and deliver a barrage of fire.
Changing weapon modes is fast and simple. You just hold down 'Q' key then Left Click to cycle modes for the weapon on the left and Right Click for the weapon on the right.
Firing works the same way. Left Click for left, Right Click for right. Simple, right?
It is. All you need is keeping an eye on your energy level. You see, these weapons are both hooked up to the same energy source. This energy source slowly recharges but when you start firing your weapons it goes down fast.
Don't worry, if you run out of energy not all is lost. When you can't fire your weapons, at least defend agains your opponent's fire. For that you have a trusty shield on each side. You can engage the shields by holding 'E' key and pressing Left or Right Click to activate the corresponding one.
The shield does not use energy, it has its own pool. You can keep the shield up for maximum 4 seconds after which it goes down. During this time however it can soak as much damage as your enemies can deliver with no problem. After it goes down you'll have to wait 4 seconds to be able to use it again.
There's only one rule in this game: run! Whether it's towards your enemy or away from him, don't stop moving. It's always better to be a moving duck than a sitting duck. Even better when the duck has two big guns ready to unleash a hellfire!
Some technical details:
The game is developed in Unity which means it can be released on Windows, Linux and Mac. Right now it's in a pre-alpha state. All assets are borrowed from various locations under free license and do not represent the final visual of the game. Gameplay works and the network code is fine for the most part. As it stands the game is playable and quite enjoyable however no release will be made at the moment.
I will be posting regular updates. Any feedback, suggestion, etc. is most welcome.
Battle machine OUT.
